How Can I Help My Child Become a Well-Rounded Adult?

Posted On: October 11, 2017 By Jim Newton

Raising children is no easy task and doesn’t come with a how-to guide; in fact, it might be better viewed as more of an ongoing learning experience for parents. Furthermore, the term “well-rounded” is very subjective; what does well-rounded mean to you? A good place to start is with the values and beliefs that serve you well in your own family and life. It’s good to remember that above all, children thrive on reliability and stability, particularly in connection with bonds and relationships with caregivers, family, and loved ones. Additionally, when you imagine what a “well-rounded” adult looks like, what do you think of? Someone who is mentally and emotionally stable? Friendly and outgoing? Talented in many different aspects? Intelligent? We tend to have high hopes and expectations for our children; but it’s important to consider who they are as individuals and nurture their innate qualities—not force identities and characteristics on them that just don’t fit. In terms of child development, well-roundedness has more to do with helping a child figure out who they are in relation to others in a stable environment. Here are some ways that you can be mindful while parenting, thinking of your child’s future, adult self:

Child Development

Understanding Child Development

There is a range in the spectrum of how children develop; not all children, parents, and households are the same, and that’s okay. So, if your child does not hit milestones at the pace you had hoped, be patient and stay dedicated and in-tune with your child. Depending on who you talk to, infancy and the formative years of life are important for a variety of reasons. One of the undisputed truths regarding child development is how children bond with their caregivers. By helping children form strong, dependable relationships with adults, children learn how to trust and relate to others. In social situations they may be hesitant to open up to others initially, and that’s perfectly fine. Social development is important, but stimulating a child’s brain is equally critical. So let’s talk a little more about how we can address different domains of development.

The Three Domains of Child Development

The term “well-rounded adult” may mean many different things to you, but it likely encompasses aspects of three domains: psychological, social, and biological. In other words, we want our children to grow up healthy mentally, socially, and physically.

Psychological

Helping children develop their psychological domain means helping them learn to express their emotions in healthy, adaptive ways. Of course, younger children tend to have a more difficult time with this, and it requires patience. Letting our children talk about their feelings and helping them attach names to their feelings like “happy” or “sad” allows children to be better communicators later on.

Social

Easing children in to the socialization process can be stressful, especially if a child is not as outgoing or social as you want them to be. Again, patience is the key; children need to warm up to socializing with others, and they will need help learning the pragmatics of social relationships.

Biological

Children’s growing and developing bodies have basic needs in order to function well in other aspects of their lives. Nutritious, healthy diets with limited sugar and plenty of water will give a child energy, improved brain function, and attention span. A full night’s rest is also important for children to retain concepts and integrate memories.

Modeling Adulthood

Some say that having children is like holding up a mirror to ourselves. Because children depend on the adults in their own lives to help them develop, it is important that parents and caregivers tend to these three domains while remaining aware of their own tendencies as adults. Parents and caregivers are a child’s only source of reference when they imagine what it’s like to be an adult, so try your best to model your behavior accordingly.
