Posted On: October 22, 2016 By Jim Newton

It’s one of the biggest moments of anyone’s life; becoming a parent for the first time. It’s impossible to prepare yourself despite endless supplies and materials available to those expecting. Up to the minute your child is born and probably after, you spend most nights wondering “how can I be the best parent possible for my child?”

While there isn’t any 100% guaranteed methods or guides to being a successful parent, there are plenty of tips to consider that will help give you the confidence in yourself as a successful parent. Here are just some of the most practical and often shared tips for parenting.

Mom Guiding Child

  • Don’t Always Fix Everything– It’s natural to want to do everything for your child and to help solve even the tiniest of frustrations that they encounter but letting them find a solution to something on their own at a young age will help them learn to be more self-reliant.
  • Discipline Is Not Punishment– When a child does something wrong, then it’s ok to punish them but that’s different from teaching discipline. Establishing limits and boundaries is more focused on helping your kid learn how to behave as competent and caring out in the world.
  • Nobody’s Perfect– Should you mess up on something or make a wrong decision, let your child know and be open with him or her. It’s a great way to show them how and when you should apologize.
  • Use Routines– Patterns and rituals will help establish a sense of security for your child. Following a morning routine will help give your child a greater feeling of control that will ultimately lead to increased confidence.
  • Blame the Action, Not the Child– When your child does do something wrong or that they aren’t supposed to, it’s important to remember to let them know that what they did was wrong or bad, not them themselves. It can be tricky to get a child to understand the difference but taking the time to make sure they do will help avoid hurting their self-esteem.
  • Consistency is Key– If you tell your child that you won’t get them something from the store, it’s important to stick to your guns and avoid giving in at the sign of tears or tantrums. It will help teach your child to respect you and your word more. Conversely, if you tell them you guys are going to do something, it’s important to follow through on that just as much as with establishing boundaries.
  • Give Praise– Don’t just say “oh you’re great” but instead be clear and specific as to what your child did that earned the praise. Whether it’s asking for something politely or putting toys away, acknowledging the positive behavior will make them more likely to keep repeating the behavior.
  • Encourage Special Times– There are a wide variety of things you and your kids can do that strengthens the bond between your family. Letting them choose the activity and ignoring any rules is a great way to have fun. Scheduling special times for the family to do an activity of your child’s choosing will show how much you love and trust them and will boost their confidence. You can even encourage special time between them and Dad. It’s widely accepted that kids with more engaged Dads show improved problem solving skills as well as a better ability to cope with things and handle more successfully.
  • There’s No Such Thing as Too Much Love– It’s easy to feel overbearing if you’re constantly saying “I love you” to your child but there is absolutely no such thing as giving a child too much love. Oftentimes parents will give children things instead of love but that come from a place of love, be it, toys or things or even just being a little more lenient towards certain situations. You’ll want to avoid doing those things too often but there is no limit on how much love you can give your kids.
