The Effects of Early Childhood Education

Posted On: October 31, 2017 By Jim Newton

Children are often viewed as the future generation of individuals to take care of our world; however, this is an awfully large burden to place on children alone. It is critical to determine, as adults, what we can do now to help our children be effective leaders and actively, socially involved in the problems of tomorrow. The first step toward ensuring a child’s ability to participate in the world is investing in the formative years of their lives. From birth to age five, children do an enormous amount of growing and developing in several ways. The phrase “it takes a village” addresses the concept that parents cannot do this alone—it takes community to help children learn how to be social, and learn how to emotionally and physically interact with the world around them.

Early childhood education focuses on the developmental concepts related to social awareness, emotional processing, and physical growth to best prepare children for the long road of education ahead of them. Kindergarten, often the introduction to formal education, can be a rough transitional period for children who have never experienced such a setting. Preschool and pre-k education allows kids to ease into the process of school life and the challenges it presents. Here are some of the potential effects of early childhood education:

Focus on Different Developmental Domains

Emotional processing, social awareness, and physical growth are three areas of child development that early childhood education can offer parents help with. Children who enter pre-k education are taught how to: deal with big emotions that they have yet to manage and learn how to regulate them; develop compassion and awareness of others’ feelings and thoughts; and be physically active to stimulate growth and development of muscles and motor skills. When children encounter situations where their emotions can become challenging, preschool educators are trained and educated on how to apply developmental concepts regarding brain maturation and emotion-regulation techniques that help children process and express their emotions in progressively healthier ways. Social development is aided through regular interaction with compassionate, helpful adults and other children with different cultural backgrounds and temperaments, particularly in team-building exercises and activities. Finally, physical growth is promoted by outdoor play and physical activities that create endorphins, give children fresh air, and get their bodies moving.

Long-Term Benefits

Much research has been conducted on the long-term effects of early childhood education, resulting in many conflicting opinions. However, it has been shown that early childhood education is correlated with perusal of college education, lesser chances of behavioral issues in adulthood, and a higher rate of high school graduation. Of course, this is highly dependent upon the quality of early education the child receives. Programs that address the different developmental domains of childhood growth are critical; however, that is not the only criteria for an effective pre-k experience. It is important for parents to research different programs, professionals, and facilities in order to understand how an early education program operates and the processes they utilize to hire teachers. In fact, the quality of education a child receives is directly dependent upon the philosophies of the program and the education of the teachers themselves. All staff that interacts with the children should have a solid understanding of child development concepts and how to apply those to an effective educational regimen. Without the basic foundation of understanding how children best learn, early childhood education can have adverse effects on a child’s wellbeing.
