If you have given thought to enrolling your child in an after school program, you may want to make a list of pertinent questions to ask or areas of concern that apply to your individual child and his or her needs. Not every after school program will be the best fit, so here are some questions that can help shed light on the qualities of the program and how they will benefit your child.
Q: What kinds of activities will my child be taking part in?
A: Every after school program should include a variety of different activities to keep the children engaged. Depending on the age of your child, he or she may be in different developmental stages depending on his or her age; it is critical that the program of your child addresses the developmental stage your child is in. For instance, if you have a young child, perhaps kindergarten-aged, then a program should include plenty of curriculum that helps develop their motor skills in outdoor activities, social skills interacting with others, and expanding their knowledge in language, writing, and reading abilities.
Q: What are the qualifications of the individuals who work there?
A: Any professional working with children should have adequate credentials and experience working with children in a school-setting. Ask the program director about their hiring process and the basic requirements they look for in qualified applicants—this may include specialized knowledge about child development concepts and training in caring for younger children versus older kids. After school programs aren’t always run by teachers, but they should be able to adequately tutor your child or provide the help with homework that they require. You should also request to meet various members of the staff who your child will be in direct contact with on a regular basis.
