How to Develop a Learning Attitude in Your Kid

Posted On: December 24, 2016 By Jim Newton

Having a negative attitude towards learning can severely impact your child’s performance in school as well as other activities that involve learning new skills. This can be for many different reasons. Your child may want to look cool or fit in with a crowd that doesn’t put any importance on schoolwork or learning. It may be that they are ahead of their class’ level and that the subject matter is too simple, or it could be the opposite and that the subject is too difficult for them and they have given up trying to understand it. Regardless of why, having a positive attitude towards learning will not only benefit your child in their studies, but in their interpersonal skills as well.

  • One way to help bring your child’s focus back to putting an effort into learning can be to lead by example. Children imitate the people in their lives and they often look to their parents when they are forming habits. To show them that there is a joy to learning, you can do things like read a book to them or with them. There are also many television shows that are educational that you can watch and interact along with your child. In the same way, there are also educational games that can be played both on electronic devices or board games. You could even go out to a park and teach them to play baseball or soccer, showing them that learning isn’t always going to be about math and sciences. Them seeing how you react to yourself in this area is also key. If you mess up something and react in a way that is similar to “Oops! I did that wrong, let me try again”, this will teach them how to be kind to themselves when a mistake is made and to continue trying.
  • Sometimes you may want to just sit down and talk to your child. You can discuss the areas that they may be falling behind in. Try to not be accusing when asking questions as to why they may be falling behind. You want to make sure that your child knows they can be open and honest with you without the fear of judgement. Many times your child may already recognize that they have fallen behind and may be ashamed of it and afraid to tell you, but by you bringing the subject to light in a safe environment, more appropriate solutions will come out of the discussion.
  • One thing that is important to remember is that your child is an individual who will develop their own interests and desires. While they may not like math, maybe they prefer reading or science. Or if your child doesn’t like sports or participating in P.E., maybe he or she would prefer to be singing or learning to play an instrument. It is important to hone in on the particular interests your child has and to let them grow and explore those interests. By finding something that they enjoy learning, you can build a plan around that. You can make it more of a reward, for instance after doing 10 math problems, they can go read or play the piano for a bit. Or you can take the method that they use to learn what they enjoy and apply it to the subjects they don’t.

  • A very important part of your child’s development of a learning attitude will be by encouragement. This means to encourage them not just when they’ve succeeded in completing the assigned task correctly, but to also encourage them even when they come up short. You want to encourage them to try again and to do better. Make sure you are also providing them the tools to do better as well. Take any failures or shortcomings as an opportunity to teach your child how they can improve, so that they don’t get the attitude of “I can’t” and want to give up.
  • Something that will greatly benefit your child is to teach them to have self-discipline. By having self-discipline, they will know when it is okay to play and when it is time to focus on the task at hand. Learning this at a young age will set them up for success, especially as schoolwork gets more difficult and life gets busier with other extracurricular activities.
